Gardeners know there are practically no limits to what constitutes a pot or planter--from fancy urns and chair seats to cinderblocks and used sneakers, if the item holds potting soil, it will work. If there's no drainage hole, create one--better yet, several.
"Any container will work as long as it drains," says Susan Hamilton, associate professor of horticulture at the University of Tennessee. "Also, the deeper the container, the easier it will be to water and maintain over the growing season."
