Ten years ago, Linda and Matt Gerlach bought a house that had the room their growing family needed, both inside and out. Now the Gerlachs would like to tackle the next phase of landscaping their backyard. Phase one remodeled the pool and created the hardscape. Now, they would like to give the entire space a low-maintenance, English-garden look, create a focal point in the area leading to the upper level of the yard and improve the rear corner of the yard by shaping the hedges and building a path. For a budget of $16,000, the Gerlachs hope to connect the multiple areas of their backyard into one cohesive look.

Designer Mary Barnhill's concept features a fountain and landscape for the playhouse. Mark Scofield's plan includes a variety of trees and vines. Cassy Aoyagi proposes a large urn as a focal point.

After a week of reviewing the three plans, the Gerlachs select Aogayi's design, and the landscape gets transformed from unfinished backyard to a colorful space with a very finished look.
