The Country Garden, By Charlie Ryrie. Reader's Digest, $26.95.
Like another recently published garden book, The One-Hour Garden: How You Can Have a No-Fuss, No-Work Garden, Reader's Digest has come out with another book that's intensely user-friendly, both in text and layout.
The Country Garden: How to Plan and Plant a Garden That Grows Itself is chock-full of bulleted lists and small, easy-to-digest sections that guide the would-be gardener through the elements of planning a country garden. It also includes sample layouts and plans for country gardens in a variety of back-yard settings. Most helpful, perhaps, is that the book asks lots of questions of the reader so that he or she can design a garden that's best for their own yard, not the one pictured in those pretty catalogues. The back of the book includes an exhaustive plant directory, with beautiful photos and short descriptions of the plants most commonly found in country gardens.
