Exotic but easy

Orchids have developed a reputation for being finicky and difficult to grow, but now there are many selections that can be easily grown with minimal care. It all starts with choosing the right plant for your environment.

Phalaenopsis, Oncidium and Paphiopedilum are just some names of orchids and are enough to scare away even the most seasoned gardener. They might be tough to pronounce, but growing them is as easy as growing anything else once you know some basic information.

There are some specific orchids that first-time orchid growers should consider. Start with an easy variety like Phalaenopsis, says orchid expert Jerry Fischer of Orchids Limited. "That's probably the most common one to grow."
