If you're short on space but have aspirations for a vegetable garden, grow your veggies in a container. It's easy to downsize a vegetable garden. Small spaces can be perfect places for growing everything from carrots and kale to lettuce and chard.

- Vining vegetables often need lots of space to grow. A trellis offers a solution for those with no room to spare.
Raised beds
If you don't have a lot of space, create a raised bed in your backyard. A raised-bed garden is often easier to maintain than an in-ground vegetable garden because you control its size and what type of soil goes in it. (Garden soils often contain weed seeds waiting to germinate, while potting mixes are usually sterile.) Because there isn't a lot of growing space, pick a few of your favorite plants to grow. Like any garden, plants in a raised bed need to be watered and fertilized regularly.
Containers
If your space is even smaller, consider a container garden. Containers fit on a porch or patio and are portable. Select containers with good drainage and fill them with good potting soil. Put multiple plants in one pot. You can even grow an assortment of plants with a specific purpose or theme, such as basil, rosemary and tomatoes for a pizza garden or hot peppers, cilantro and garlic for a salsa garden. Due to the limited amount of soil in a container garden, take extra care with watering and fertilizing.
