Before: This brick patio doesn't have an appealing destination and offers no shade.

After: A copper-roofed gazebo, set at an angle, offers both shade and a lovely destination.
This patio is a sea of bricks, and the homeowners, Terry and Chris Gregorio, need some shade. Designer Denise Muscarella's plan proposes a redwood gazebo that dramatically solves the problem, while also providing an attention-grabbing destination. The gazebo is roofed by simple copper pipes. White potato vines will grow over the gazebo, giving the space underneath a lattice-type shade. Sweet alyssum, purple pincushion flowers, lavender and other easy perennials are planted in containers at the base of each post. The entire cost of the project is about $1,300.

A smart way to keep posts from rotting underground: a metal bracket is sunk into the hole...

...and then the metal bracket is set in concrete and attached to the wood post.

Notching the rafters helps give them a place to rest more evenly on the ledger boards.

The copper flashing was bent to fit the beams; the work was handled by a metal fabrication shop and was very inexpensive.

A support piece to help stabilize the structure gets a bit of a decorative design.

The roof is constructed of copper pipes with capped ends. The pipes cost about $200.

The copper pipes rest on individual hangers.
