Figure A

Gardening expert Marianne Binetti shows how to make a raised garden bed (figure A) without straining an already bad back.

Materials:

stacking cottage stones (Brick or cinderblock also work well.)
planting compost
rebar (a long, flexible steel pole; available at home-improvement centers)

Steps:

Figure B

  1. Stacking cottage stones can be found at most home centers and are very easy to work with because of their rounded outer edge. Create a single layer perimeter no wider than four feet across (so you can reach all parts of the bed), then add a second layer. There is no need to cultivate the ground--just place the stones directly on grass (figure B).

  2. Fill the bed with planting compost. Make sure the compost falls in a slight, dome-like effect to aid drainage.

Figure C

  • Make a rebar arch by having a partner at one end and you at the other, then walk toward each other with the pole, bringing the ends up in a "U" shape. Place the ends of the rebar at two ends of the raised bed (figure C). The arch can now be used to train tomato plants or other climbing vegetation.
