Figure B
Scott Robb will do almost anything to make his plants grow bigger. Alaska's self-proclaimed "psycho grower" feeds his giant cabbages a secret blend of rabbit and chicken manure every single day through irrigation tubes (figure A), supplies his pampered plants with water warmed to between 75 and 80 degrees (figure B), and--his latest contraption--has rigged an air-conditioning system for his colossal cabbages (figure C). He also keeps his cabbages pest-free by vacuuming the leaves (figure D). To keep out bigger varmints, like moose, Robb added an electric fence, set at 10,000 to 15,000 volts--not enough power to hurt a moose, he says, but "just enough to get its attention."

Figure E
Robb has made the Guinness Book of World Records not once but three times for his garden giants. This year's quest is about a gargantuan celery that has, thanks to Robb's ministrations, gained a height of five feet and a very sizable girth (figure E). He's been working on developing a prize-winning celery plant for four to five years, and the next day he heads to the Alaska State Fair, ready to reveal his celery masterpiece to the rest of the world--and hopefully pick up an award. The magic number to beat is 52 pounds, 7-1/2 ounces.

"I used to go to the fair just to show the vegetables, but now I don't go to show or place, I kind of go there to win," Robb says. Will he? Tune in to find out!
