One of the most popular herbal supplements sold is Echinacea, also called purple coneflower. You might be growing it in your own backyard. It's a great drought-resistant perennial that loves the summer sun and poor soils and blooms in late summer to early fall. Most people know coneflowers by their purple petals, but they also come in white and various shades of pink. They typically grow between one and three feet tall and grow best in Zones 3 to 10.
Once the flowers fade in the fall, don't cut them down. Echinacea are a perfect plant for winter interest. Also, they self-sow, which means they multiply very quickly. It's a great plant to divide with your friends, so in the spring when you see the sprouts, dig up a few and pass them on.
