Here's a great way to say hello to visitors at your door. It's a door knocker bouquet with a twist—it features a live plant. Here's how to make it.
The door knocker technique can be used with many different flowers and containers to achieve a variety of looks. These bouquets also make great gifts.Materials:
variety of flowering or foliage plants in small pots
piece of burlap (or other container)
leak-proof plastic bag or plastic wrap
raffia, ribbon or something decorative to tie it together
Steps:
- Select plants with foliage and flower colors that complement the burlap.
- Remove plants from their containers and place the base of the plants, soil and all, in a plastic bag (or wrap in plastic). The plastic will help plants retain moisture.
- Place the plastic-wrapped base of the plants on the burlap, then wrap the burlap around the plastic. Bundle it by tying with raffia or ribbon. Trim the burlap as desired, leaving enough tail to hang it from the door.
- For something different, substitute the burlap for a recycled tin can and use a wire hook as a hanger.
- Remember to keep plants watered, especially if they face a sunny exposure.
