Tulips are synonymous with spring, but if you can't wait until April to enjoy them, most florists carry a wide variety of tulips that you can enjoy as early as January. Some of the most common tulips are the traditional single tulips that come in a variety of colors.

Once you've decided on the variety of tulips you like, it's best to find buds that are tightly closed. If foliage is ratty, stay away from them. Cut off the bottom of the stems, remove any leaves that will be submerged and put the tulips in water. Tulips don't need flower preservative. Change the water daily, using cool water, if you want blooms to last as long as possible. And make sure you place the arrangement in a cool room.
