Visit any garden center today and you'll see more pots than you've ever seen before. That's because container gardening is hotter than ever. But which container is right for you?
First of all, we have the terra-cotta pot--a great material. If you live in a colder climate, though, you can't leave it out during the winter, and these pots can be rather heavy.
For the same look, you can buy a resin pot or a foam pot--much lighter weight--and the best part, it can be left outside throughout the year. They cost twice as much, but you can use it year-round with no breakage.
For a pot with a little more substance, check out cast concrete. These are the heavy-duty pots--thick, solid concrete, good for any kind of climate. If you're in a colder climate, use a lighter weight soil. Because these are so substantial, you are going to spend a little more money, but keep in mind you're going to have these forever. If you like this look but can’t afford the price, check out the alternative in resin--lightweight and it almost matches.
Pebblestone pots are perfect for a rustic home or cabin. They're handmade with Mexican beach pebbles that are set into wet concrete. It's best to bring these pots inside for the winter; otherwise, the stones may pop out.
For more color, consider glazed pots. They come in a rainbow of colors that can be coordinated with a deck or patio. Made in Malaysia and China, these are clay pots that have been glazed and refired, so they're more weather-resistant than natural clay. Glazed pots are great for southern climates all year-round; in the north, however, it's best to bring indoors.
Mexican pots are very popular in the Southwest. Since they're only single-fired, they're a softer clay and not as durable as other clay pots. They can tolerate only mild temperatures, but they're less expensive.
