Tropical Haven

Before: The homeowners want to turn their uninviting backyard into a relaxing retreat that would enhance their pool and conceal the unsightly power lines.

After: The straw-palapa seating area and spa transform this space into a tropical getaway. Lush plants will soon mask the power lines and add privacy.

Before: The homeowners want to smooth the lumpy surface of the side yard, and they'd also like to add a basketball court.

After: After leveling the yard, the couple decides to install artificial turf for the playground. The new basketball court is the perfect addition to the kids' play area.

Sharon and Thomas Gourley and their two children live in a custom-built home just minutes from the Las Vegas strip. Other than a pool, the backyard is just a collection of rocks, dirt and tumbleweed. The Gourleys hope to transform the barren landscape surrounding the pool into a safer, more enjoyable place where the family can play and relax. They would especially like something lush and tropical to remind them of their wedding in Hawaii.

The Gourleys decide to use the expertise of Mike Kramer, who plans on planting lots of blooming plants for plenty of color and shade. To help the Gourleys achieve their tropical paradise, he lines the pool and tops the spa with straw palapas to provide multiple areas of shade and privacy. Their barren landscape is transformed into a Hawaiian resort for the entire family to enjoy.
