One of the realities of getting older is that it becomes increasingly difficult to bend, stoop or get up from a kneeling position. "But for gardeners like me who are getting up to those years," says master gardener Paul James, "or for gardeners with a physical disability, there are ways around those problems."

One of the simplest ways to move with ease is with one of these handy garden kneelers (figure A). Kneelers are great for all gardeners because they allow you to work in the garden without ever getting your knees dirty. And kneelers are available from several different manufacturers for less than $30.

"I've had a lightweight plastic model for more than 20 years," says James. "But recently I upgraded to this heavy-duty model made of steel, which collapses for easy storage (figure B)." When positioned upside down, it's relatively easy to kneel on the padded cushion and tend to your chores. The cushion is easy on the knees, and the device is extremely stable when placed on solid ground. Best of all, the handles help you get back up again when you're done.

Flipped over, the kneeler can be used as a bench, enabling you to perform tasks that would otherwise require you to bend or stoop (figure C). "To be honest, I haven't actually reached the point where I need one of these kneelers. My back is strong, and my knees are holding up well," says James. But kneelers can make gardening more comfortable regardless of your physical needs.
