Hosts Jackie Cicchino and John Greenlee share several useful tips that solve some of the problems commonly associated with container gardening.

  • Use coffee filters to line the bottoms of small to medium-size containers before adding potting mix. This will help prevent the soil from being washed away during watering.
  • When selecting a drainage medium for an indoor planter that needs to be easily movable, use plastic foam packing pieces; this will help prevent the container from becoming too heavy.
  • For outdoor planters, use gravel as drainage medium; this will add weight to the container and prevent a strong wind from blowing it over. To help keep soil from getting washed away during watering, cover the gravel with a piece of screening or a weed mat.
