Growing Cacti

Tips

• Cacti containers should be shallow. Use half-pots, which are also known as pans. These are usually about three to six inches deep. If using a galvanized container, be sure to put in a liner before planting cacti. Terra-cotta containers work well because they absorb excess water.

• Cacti need to be watered only every two to three months. Ask about care and watering requirements at the garden center when purchasing cacti.

Materials:

cacti containers
clean rocks
activated charcoal
premixed soil
gloves
stones
moss

1. Line the bottom of cacti containers with clean rocks to aid in drainage (figure A). Add a layer of activated charcoal on top of the rocks to absorb odors. Charcoal is available at any pet store or garden center.

2. Fill the container with soil. Use premixed soil that has been formulated for cacti, or make a mixture at home by mixing two parts sand with one part soil and a small amount of perlite.

3. Break up any lumps in the soil before planting cacti, then plant each cacti. Always wear gloves when handling any cacti because of their sharp, pointy little needles.
