Indoor Desert Landscape

Inside Dirt : Episode ISD-118 -- More Projects »
Inside Dirt visits Duane Derr in Aurora, Colorado, to see firsthand his incredible success growing cacti in a greenhouse environment. Cacti are easy to care for, says Derr, and very adaptable. He should know--he's been growing the plants indoors for 25 years.

"I think most people think that cacti are just these sticky things that are dangerous," he says. "I don't think that's what they are. I think they have much more shape and form and color and texture."

Unfortunately, cacti can be susceptible to the typical insect pests, including mealybugs. To combat the problem, Derr periodically cleans his cacti with cotton swabs and a mister filled with isopropyl alcohol.

In all, Derr cares for more than 100 cactus plants, some of them at least 50 years old.
