Magnolias

by Rosemary Barrett
(Firefly Books, paperback)

This 90-page guide to planting and growing magnolias begins with the history of the tree and concludes with an epilogue about the author's personal dedication to the fragrant blossom. Magnolias, Barrett writes, are "as old as father time," and fossils have been found dating back 100 million years.

Along with a brief description of each species of Magnolia, Barrett show readers how to landscape using magnolias and how to propagate and cultivate the tree.

Beautifully illustrated with large color photographs, Magnolias is a short and breezy guide to caring for and experimenting with an ancient, as well as striking blossom. But that doesn't mean readers will be well-served flipping through the book and skipping around. Barrett writes that it's best to read every word of this short, breezy book to come to fully understand the tree that has become the center of her life.
