Cedar is a pleasantly-scented alternative to moth balls.
Norma Zager discusses methods for storing clothes for the winter, including closet alternatives such as plastic storage boxes and empty suitcases.
  • Always launder clothes before storing.

  • Store in a dry area.

  • If you use a storage closet, then you need to make sure to kill mildew once a year with a mix of 1/4 cup borax and two cups of hot water. Just apply the mixture to the walls, allow to set for one day, then sponge with clean water. When dry, sweep or vacuum up powder.

  • Use a commercial dehumidifier such as silica gel or activated alumina. A good substitute is chalk.

  • To get rid of a mothball smell, use cedar-scented mothballs.

  • If no moths are present, use cedar as a deterrent. Cedar can be used to line closets, can be hung, or set out in boxes.

* Note: If you use plastic containers to store clothes, do not use mothballs.
