The Gardener's Kit

Way to Grow : Episode WTG-113 -- More Projects »
Host Mayita Dinos shows how to pack a complete "gardener's kit" that prevents annoying return trips to the house to fetch forgotten supplies. The necessary items cover safety, planting/maintenance, watering and fun. Featured tools and tips include:
  • Safety Supplies: First and foremost, include items that will provide protection from potential hazards:
    • sunglasses
    • sunscreen (should be reapplied throughout the day to compensate for perspiration)
    • collapsible hat and gloves
    • pre-moistened baby wipes
    • adhesive bandages (for small nicks or cuts)
    • insect repellent

  • Tools of the Trade: To avoid running back to the garage with each new task, include the following essentials in the kit:
    • large pruners (for major projects such as hedges)
    • small pruners (for minor projects such as deadheading)
    • weeders and various hand tools
    • bleach and water mixture--10% bleach, 90% water (for sterilizing pruners)
  • Watering Wares: A couple of basic items will generally suffice here:
    • watering can
    • collapsible hose

  • Handy Helpers: Various odds and ends that make almost any garden task easier:
    • old pieces of hosiery (for tying plants to a stake or fence)
    • ties and twine
    • fertilizer in baggies (much easier than carrying around a large bucket or bag)
    • piece of screening (the wire mesh of the screening can provide drainage)
    • strawberry containers
    • measuring spoons and cups
    • labels (to mark various plants as they are installed)
  • Just for Fun: Create instant memories by placing the following "extras" in the kit:
    • garden journal and pen for taking notes on the garden's progress)
    • camera (for that one-time perfect shot of a bee gathering nectar from a sunflower)
