Before: Wasteland

Tara and Doug Blackburn have put a huge effort into renovating their Craftsman-style home in La Jolla, Calif., just north of San Diego. The only thing standing between them and a true dream home is their nightmare of a backyard: Overgrown brush, dilapidated sheds and debris from old projects make this area an eyesore for them and a hazard for their three sons. With a budget of $125,000, Tara and Doug want a backyard that lives up to the rest of their home and the beautiful surroundings. Rising to the challenge of this hilltop hideaway are the design team of Mike Welch and Steve Jacobs, the team of Patti Ferner and Paul Kroger, and Melanie Mackenzie.

Tara and Doug have done wonders with the interior of their house and put in a backbreaking effort turning their front yard into a showplace.
