Healthy Gardening

Way to Grow : Episode WTG-211 -- More Projects »
In this final segment, hosts Jackie Cicchino and John Greenlee share several important tips for healthy gardening.
  • Always bend at the knees to avoid straining back muscles. This is especially important when lifting heavy objects.
  • Hold the hoe with thumbs pointed up (similar to holding a broom). This encourages a more erect stance, thus reducing back stress.
  • Take frequent breaks while weeding and stretch often.
  • Scrape fingernails over soap before getting started in the garden - this will keep out dirt and can easily be rinsed away later.
  • For heavy garden jobs, protect hands with durable gloves.
  • Remember to apply sunscreen, insect repellent and moisturizer before heading outside for a day of garden work.
