Excerpt from Accent Your Garden
by the editors of Fine Gardening (Taunton Press)
"Enclosures--whether created from walls, fences or hedges--form an architectural backbone for the garden. They define boundaries and divide large areas into smaller, more manageable spaces. In small gardens, dividing the spaces into multiple "rooms" often makes them seem larger.
Walls, fences and hedges can screen unwanted views and provide vines a support upon which to scamper while adding vertical accent to the garden. Properly placed, they even protect plants from harsh winds, change of patterns of sunlight and provide a solid backdrop for colorful plantings."
