Former editor-in-chief Karol DeWulf Nickell of Better Homes and Gardens magazine shares how to create lightweight trough containers to add a natural touch to your landscape.
Steps:
- Mix together equal amounts of coarse perlite, peat moss that's been sifted and light Portland cement. Add a handful of fiber mesh.
- Combine ingredients with water to the consistency of thick oatmeal.
- Line the container that you'll be using to form your trough with plastic. Pour the mixture into the container and press around the edges.
- Once dry, remove the trough and lightly sand off any rough edges. Fill with potting soil.
- Nickell suggests using succulents since they withstand heat and can go days without watering. Or instead of filling with soil and plants, fill the trough with water and use as a water element in your garden.
