In the test garden at Better Homes and Gardens magazine in Des Moines, former editor-in-chief Karol DeWulf Nickell shares how to create two types of vine poles to take advantage of vertical garden space.

Secure a single piece of board in the ground and attach two uprights on either side. Drill holes (the same size of small-diameter copper pipe) four to five inches apart on both boards. Cut and bend the copper pipe into half circles and insert into the holes. Top the structure with leftover wood to create a "roof."

Create a larger vine pole with the same materials used above but space the two boards a foot apart. Drill holes into both boards and cut the copper pipe into sections to fit in between the two boards.
If you have limited garden space, decorate with large planters instead. To make it lightweight, place small plastic pots upside-down in the bottom. Fill with soil and plants in a variety of heights.
