1. Stamp the large cover image onto the white card stock and color it in. Cover with laminate film and trim out along the outer edges (figure A).
2. Make a pattern for the mat board: Trace the shape of the cover design piece onto tracing paper. Draw around the outer edge about 1/4 inch larger on all sides and simplify the contour if needed. Be sure that one edge (the hinge edge) is a straight line. Transfer the design onto the mat board and cut out two identical pieces (outer covers) and two pieces 1/16 inch smaller (inner covers) (figure B). Set together and mark which side is the inside and outside.
3. Color along all the cut edges of the mat board using a marker that matches the bright color paper. Use adhesive laminate, spray adhesive or dry transfer adhesive over the whole surface of the back of the paper. Lay the paper down, adhesive side up, and set the four pieces of mat board onto the paper (figure C). Carefully trim the excess paper away using a craft knife.
4. To make the hinge: Cut a piece of the colored paper 1-1/2 wide by the length of the hinge side. Make two score lines lengthwise 1/2 inch apart down the center (adjust score width if needed to accommodate the thickness of the clip or binder post used) (figure D). To stiffen the hinge of the book, glue another strip of paper down the center between the two fold lines (figure E).
5. Use super stick tape on the two outer tabs of the hinge to attach it to the inside surface of the two outer covers (figure F). Use glue or double-stick tape to apply the inner cover to the inside surface of the book back (figure G). Do the same to apply the inner cover to the unfinished surface of the book back.
6. If using binding posts, punch two holes just large enough to accommodate the posts in the back inner cover (figure H), slide the posts in place, then attach this piece into the book (figure I). If using a flat-back clip, glue the clip in place once the inner back cover is in place. Use glue or double stick tape to apply the outer cover of the book front to the left tab of the hinge (figure J).
7. Apply the inner cover to the inside surface of the book front (figure K). Note: A small loop of elastic to hold a pencil can be attached between the cover layers before they are glued together (figure L).
8. Apply the design to the front cover. Cut a stack of paper and punch if needed to fill the book (figure M). Add a magnet to the book back if desired.
